Neil Armstrong, 1969 preparing for the Apollo 11 launch

This man (I bet you all know him) was the first man to walk on the moon after travelling there on board the spacecraft Apollo 11.

To become an astronaut you had to be an engineer and a pilot, (the basics of space flight). He applied to the NASA space programme and passed all the health and IQ tests allowing him to be one of the top contenders for the space flight programme.

One of Armstrong’s pre-astronaut jobs was as a Navy pilot. Being excellent in his role he also volunteered to be a test pilot.

He died in 2012 at the age of 82.
