Unexpected outcomes, unpredictable controversies and daring performances define this year’s Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo! Beyond their showcase of elite athleticism and world-class performance, the 2026 Winter Olympics, in Cortina d’Ampezzo and across Northern Italy, provided a stage for dramatic sporting outcomes, and memorable, iconic moments of history.
A notable example of a dramatic outcome during the Olympics occurred in curling, a sport traditionally known as calm and sportsmanlike. A heated exchange of words developed between Swedish curler Oskar Eriksson and Canadian curler Marc Kennedy when Eriksson accused Kennedy of having touched the stone to allegedly alter its path. Although officials declared there had been no violation of the rules by Kennedy or Eriksson, the on-ice dispute was unprecedented for this type of competition and exemplified the extreme pressures athletes endure while competing at an Olympics level.
Many other competitions had dramatic and unexpected results. Sweden, which has consistently dominated in the world of curling throughout the years, did not live up to expectations; they did not win the same number of medals they typically win. Likewise, Canada, a country historically considered to be one of the strongest nations at the Winter Olympics, struggled and achieved fewer gold medals than anticipated.
The Winter Olympics provided many opportunities for inspirational performances. At age 41, American athlete Elana Meyers Taylor won the gold medal in the women’s monobob event, demonstrating that age and determination continue to provide advantages in competitive athletics. Elana Meyers Taylor’s performance was especially noteworthy due to her past Olympic medals which were all silver medals and now she finally broke through to the top of the podium.
Other examples of inspiring performances include the numerous comebacks in figure skating and the many young athletes winning medals in freestyle skiing events, even defeating long-time, well-established winners. These results showcase the unpredictability of Olympic competitions, in which preparation, mental toughness and timing can be just as important as physical ability. In general, the 2026 Winter Olympics demonstrate that the Olympics are not only about demonstrating physical ability, but they also put to the test an athlete’s ability to handle adversity and personal challenges. In addition to the historic victories, there were many moments of tension and unpredictability that remind those watching that even at the highest levels of competition, athletes are fundamentally human beings with emotions.
