This Is Our Street

Carlotta, Margherita & Virginia

For the past two weeks Year 12 English B students have been considering road safety in conjunction with COBIS and the ‘My Street’ campaign.

The campaign can be found here: www.mystreet.org
The campaign focuses on the right for young people to travel safely through the streets where they live. There are many angles to the campaign such as safer driving, better infrastructure and town planning, safety of young women on public transport and the right to grow up breathing clean air.
The campaign used the following statements of rights:
WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO USE SAFE ROADS AND STREETS WITHOUT THREAT TO LIFE OR HEALTH
WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO EXPLORE THE WORLD IN SAFETY
WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO ACCESS EDUCATION WITHOUT THREAT OR INJURY.
WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE HEARD.
The students  have been out and about around Via Pantano looking at whether it is safe and have been considering wider aspects of road safety, drink driving, mobile phone use when behind the wheel and the very real dangers faced by young people in developing countries.
Posted here is a video made by them during the campaign.
Matteo, a standard level student said:

‘These two weeks have made me look more carefully at behaviour on the roads in Milan. I notice everything now. There is a lot that has to change.’
