Fairtrade Fortnight Breakfast Success!

On Monday 7th March, during break time, the students in Mr Atkins Year 12  Economics class ran a Fairtrade Breakfast event to raise awareness of Fairtrade Fortnight, selling a variety of Fairtrade foods that they made themselves such as, waffles, pancakes and cupcakes.

In order to promote and sustain the fair trade association, only products which were baked using fairtrade ingredients were offered. The Economics class has now challenged the rest of the students over the next two weeks to inform themselves about fairtrade and learn where these products are available and try to turn towards Fairtrade products as much as possible. Our fellow students are fighting to bring this message forward: “Stand up for farmers, sit down for breakfast!”

As IB Economics students, we have studied what fairtrade is and have a good understanding about the benefits it brings to the local farmers and the economy as a whole once it is has been implemented.

Fair trade is trade between companies in developed countries and producers in developing countries where fair prices are paid to the producers. In this way farmers working in developing countries such as Africa are paid fairly and exploitation is avoided. Remember every time you purchase a fairtrade product, you will be helping a farmer earn a decent wage, allowing him to have enough money to provide food for his family and guarantee his children a decent life.

Stand up for farmers, sit down for breakfast

As part of the IB diploma course, Development Economics was a topic that we studied and in it Fairtrade is discussed as a economic development strategy. Due to this, the idea of running an event was decided upon as it would also be a Creativity Activity and Service project for the students.

The amount raised from the breakfast raised a total of €108.72. This was donated to our schools Cambodia Project.
