As you all may know, the 8th of March is the annual International Women’s Day. This is the day where people (both women and men) recognise the great achievements of women and a call for gender equality. It has been celebrated since 1911.

This years theme, “Make It Happen” is encouraging effective action for advancing and recognising women. Thousands of people worldwide come together to celebrate this day and the governments of most countries, charities, organisations, educational institutions, women’s groups, corporations and the media also make it their job to try and make this day a special one for all girls and women.

You yourself can make a difference

Though this may be true, women’s day is not celebrated in every country because there is still a lot of sexism and mis-treatment of women and girls in some places around the world. This is why people like us, who take our respect for granted and live in safe and female-friendly environments, have to make it our goal to help those who are suffering in the shadows of the male gender.

You yourself can make a difference, all you have to do is run an event in your school or your neighbourhood to raise awareness. You can also participate in local activities or campaigns, paint your building or room purple (the colour for women’s day), wear purple, make a film and show it to your class or even pin adverts around your city. If you don’t have time for doing this, you can even go online and make a difference. Go on twitter and use the hashtags #makeithappen, #womensday, #IWD, #internationalwomensday, #PaintItPurple or retweet and share any content you find.

Remember, any action that you take in advertising women’s rights campaigns, will help. Not just on Women’s Day of course. Everyday should count as an equal rights’ day for both men and women but if we start doing it once a year it will soon start to become more common. So let’s hear it for the women!
